High Power SMA - Versions

HP-SMA connectors are available in two versions depending on power with and without heat sink. The potential power depends on many factors. It depends predominantly on the core diameter of the fiber, the laser’s beam profile and, moreover, on the spot size of the focused laser beam as well as its central alignment to the fiber core. Ideally, the spot diameter should account for about 80% of the fiber core. At capacities of up to 50 watts, normally a heat sink is not necessary, presumed the cladding modes are not stripped. Otherwise, it is recommended to use an appropriately sized heatsink even at 10 watts, assuming that 1% of the power in the cladding is guided.

The high power SMA connector generally is offered only for detached fibers. At higher powers, copper ferrules are used. The complete assembly is mounted twist and stress free, but mechanically very stable. The ferrule components are guaranteed free of adhesives.

Depending on the requirements are the SMA fiber cables in the following versions available:

  • defidefined length of the mode stripping
  • Air or water cooling
  • End cap to reduce the power density
  • Monitoring of fiber breakage, connector temperature and connectivity
